Community Awareness

Community Awareness

NSW Aboriginal Safe Gambling Services focuses on raising the Awareness of the issues associated to gambling amongst Aboriginal communities and relevant services.

Currently gambling is a very sensitive topic which many communities are still not willing to talk about. Our focus is to first raise the awareness so communities can begin discussing the issues, if the community acknowledges that there are problems associated with gambling, then we facilitate strategies to begin tackling them.

In collaboration with all GambleAware Services our process includes:

  1. Awareness
  2. Acknowledgement
  3. Ownership
  4. Collaboration
  5. Planning
  6. Implementation

This process is underpinned by a very strong cultural context focusing on cultural protocols, sensitivities, awareness and appreciation.

We are not here to tell Aboriginal people what to do with their money, however if people which to gamble then we try to teach safe and responsible gambling.

Another focus of the Awareness program is to ensure Aboriginal people recognise what services are available and understand their roles. Historically Aboriginal people have been reluctant to access Gambling Counselling organisations, so we aim to improve this process by breaking down any barriers and stigmas.
